Service Logs that Are Actually Being Written

Every OCI service log is off until somebody turns it on: a VCN records no flow log, a load balancer no access log, a bucket no read log. Each log here is one service, one resource, one category, created enabled; a log created with is_enabled = false appears in the list and records nothing, and has to be accepted by name. Retention is 30 days by default and the shortest is reported.

Verification

Static-verified

Passed: validated and lint-clean (provider-schema-validated for AWS/Azure/GCP; Terraform-language lint elsewhere).

Conformance

  • Static validation (fmt · validate · tflint)
  • Security scan clean (Checkov)
  • Plan tests (mocked: validation rules · outputs)

Provenance

  • SHA-256 checksum
  • Signature (pending)

Functional

  • Live test pending (no cloud run yet)

Use it from the registry

terraform · opentofu
module "logging" {

  version = "1.0.0"
}

Needs a registry token from /account/tokens. The module itself is free; the account is what identifies you. Full setup: registry docs.

Inputs & outputs

Create a free account to read this module's contract

The declared contract - every input name, type, default and description, plus every output - is shown to signed-in accounts, not to anonymous visitors.

A free account sees the contract of every module in the catalogue. There is no subscription and nothing to buy - the modules are free to download, and they run under Vizier.

Documentation

oci-logging

OCI service logs that are actually being written. Works with Terraform and OpenTofu (>= 1.6), oci provider >= 8.0, < 9.0.

Every service log is off until somebody turns it on. A VCN records no flow log, a load balancer no access log, a bucket no read or write log - the service runs, the console shows it healthy, and the first time anybody wants to know who fetched the object there is nothing to look at. Each log here is one service, one resource, one category, created enabled.

is_enabled = false creates the log in the list and writes nothing to it. It is how a log is paused during a noisy migration, and how it stays paused. Refused without accept_disabled_logs.

Retention is 30 days by default, in steps of 30 up to 180. Six months is the most the service keeps; beyond that is a Service Connector to Object Storage. shortest_retention_days reports the oldest question the group can answer.

A log group is a permission boundary. IAM on logging is written against the group, so one group per audience is the pattern.

Verification

Static validation runs tofu fmt, init, validate, tflint and checkov. This module has not yet had a live test, so it is published as statically validated with its live test pending and does not carry the live-tested mark.
