A Backup Vault with Enforced Retention and Resources that Follow It

The vault and the plan are what the console shows; the association is what makes a backup exist, and a plan associated with nothing backs up nothing. Enforced retention is the setting ransomware cannot undo - no backup younger than it can be deleted by anyone - and WITHIN_PROJECT access lets a compromised owner restore everything. Resources come with the plan; 14 days enforced; org-scoped.

Documentation

gcp-backup-dr

A backup vault with enforced retention, a plan, and the resources that actually follow it. Works with Terraform and OpenTofu (>= 1.6), google provider >= 6.0, < 7.0.

A plan associated with nothing backs up nothing. The vault and the plan are what the console shows; the association is what makes a backup exist. Resources are taken with the plan; none needs accept_unassociated_plan.

backup_minimum_enforced_retention_duration is the setting ransomware cannot undo. The vault refuses to delete any backup younger than it, whoever asks. Fourteen days here; under seven needs accept_short_enforced_retention.

access_restriction decides who can even see the vault. WITHIN_PROJECT lets a compromised owner of the protected project restore - or enumerate - its backups. WITHIN_ORGANIZATION here; project-scoped needs accept_project_scoped_vault.

Verification

Static validation runs tofu fmt, init, validate, tflint and checkov. This module has not yet had a live test, so it is published as statically validated with its live test pending and does not carry the live-tested mark.
