Macie Sensitive Data Discovery

Sensitive-data discovery for S3 with targeted classification jobs, sampling for surveying a large bucket first, and findings filters that archive an expected result with its reason. No scan-everything default: Macie bills per GB inspected.

Verification

Static-verified

Passed: validated and lint-clean (provider-schema-validated for AWS/Azure/GCP; Terraform-language lint elsewhere).

Conformance

  • Static validation (fmt · validate · tflint)
  • Security scan pending (Checkov)
  • Plan tests (mocked: validation rules · outputs)

Documentation

aws-macie

Macie sensitive-data discovery for S3: account enablement, targeted classification jobs, findings filters and optional organization delegation. Works with Terraform and OpenTofu (>= 1.6), AWS provider >= 6.0, < 7.0.

Defaults worth knowing:

  • There is no scan-everything default. Macie bills per GB inspected, and pointing a job at every bucket in a mature account is the most expensive accident available in this corner of AWS. Automated discovery is continuous and cheap; classification jobs name their buckets
  • sampling_percentage is offered prominently: surveying a large bucket at 20% tells you whether a full pass is worth buying
  • Findings filters use ARCHIVE to suppress an expected finding while keeping it and the reason. That is an exception somebody decided, rather than a gap nobody noticed
  • A filter with no criterion is refused at plan: it would match everything

Verification

Static validation runs tofu fmt, init, validate, tflint and checkov. This module has not yet had a live test, so it is published as statically validated with its live test pending and does not carry the live-tested mark.
