tempo
Grafana Tempo from the upstream release (sha256-verified), as a single-binary hardened system service on loopback with local block storage, an OTLP/HTTP receiver for applications on the same host, a block retention written down and usage reporting switched off. Original role for EL 10, live-tested with podman on Rocky Linux 10.
No package, so the checksum is the whole story. EL 10 carries no
tempo; Grafana ships a release with a checksum file beside it. The
role downloads both and has Ansible's get_url refuse the asset unless its
SHA-256 is the one in the vendor's file, then installs the binaries as
root's in /usr/local/bin, pinned by tempo_version.
A service account, a hardened unit, a loopback listener. tempo
is a system user with no shell that owns the data directory and nothing
else; the unit runs with NoNewPrivileges, PrivateTmp, ProtectHome and
ProtectSystem=strict. The listener is 127.0.0.1:3200 by default,
for a proxy that authenticates or a client on the same host; the live test
reads the listening sockets and expects loopback only.
A trace, stored and found. The live test sends one span over
OTLP/HTTP to the receiver on 127.0.0.1:4318 and reads the trace back by
id from /api/traces/<id>, expecting its service.name: the
distributor, ingester and querier all ran in the one process. Tempo has
no configuration checker (-config.verify does not exist); a bad file
fails at start, which the live test catches.
Retention written down, reporting off. Upstream keeps blocks for
fourteen days and reports usage to Grafana Labs; the role writes
tempo_block_retention into the file and reporting_enabled: false,
which the live test reads back. tempo-cli is installed beside the
server for block inspection.
