memcached
memcached from AppStream, configured through the one file its packaged unit reads, on loopback with UDP off. Original role for EL 10, live-tested with podman on Rocky Linux 10.
No download, and no version to pin. EL 10 packages memcached, so the
role installs it by name and takes what the distribution ships: a security
update arrives through dnf, not through a new release of this role. What the
role owns is the configuration and the proof that the service works.
The distribution's unit, our configuration. The role installs
memcached, writes the configuration the package leaves open, and enables
the unit the package ships: systemctl cat memcached shows the
distribution's own unit, not one this role invented. The listener is
127.0.0.1 by default, for a proxy that authenticates or a client
on the same host; the live test reads the listening sockets and expects
loopback only.
Proven over the protocol itself. The live test stores a value and
reads it back over the text protocol, then reads stats and checks the
memory limit and the thread count are the ones this role configured, so a
change to memcached_cache_size_mb is visible in the running server
rather than only in the file.
UDP is off, and that is a security setting. An open UDP memcached is
the classic amplification reflector, and this build has no
authentication: the listen address is the access control. The role always
writes the flag, -U 0 or -U <port>, rather than relying on the
package's default being off: a mutation run that set
memcached_udp_enabled: true changed nothing at all while the flag was
merely omitted, which means the live test's "nothing listens on UDP"
assertion was proving nothing. It fails now when UDP is asked for.
